Pakistan is running short of clean water and that is a fact. Researchers have concluded that Pakistan will run out of the water by 2025. According to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in the top 3 countries who are likely to face a serious water shortage in the near future. The water crisis in Pakistan is posing a serious threat to its stability and survival because the shortage of water will spread chaos all over the country. Pakistan will be the most water-stressed country by the year 2040.
Pakistan is an agricultural country and its economy depends on it. As an agricultural country, we need water in access to water our crops. The cycle of our economy cannot work without water. We are throwing about 70 billion UDS worth of water into the river into the sea every year because of the lack of infrastructure and water reservoirs. We can not afford to lose so much water every year. Our economy is very likely to collapse when the water crisis starts in Pakistan.
How We Can Avoid Water Crisis
We as a nation can avoid this upcoming water crisis in Pakistan. We just need to prepare our country and ourselves for the inevitable.
Building Water Reservoirs
Pakistan has not built a major water reservoir in the last 2-3 decades. No one has paid attention to this issue for a very long time until the Chief Justice started campaigning for dam fund in recent years. People are donating millions for the dam fund so that we can build new dams before we run out of the water. There are steps taken to build these dams but there is still a lot to be done.
Stop Wasting Water
We as a nation and individuals, like to waste everything especially if it is free. We have got used to wasting water that we don’t even realize it. We don’t even give it a second thought. We need to be more careful and smart about our problems. Bill Gates has partnered with global investors to reinvent toilets. These prototype toilets can recycle your waste and turn it into clean and drinkable water. I know it sounds gross but the point is that they have done something which is better than nothing.
A Modern Water Policy
Pakistan has no clear water policy right now and the elected officials do not seem to care enough to do something about it. Pakistan needs to develop a modern water policy as soon as possible and act on it to preserve our water resources.
We need to be smart and efficient about our water usage. Using modern and efficient means for agriculture purposes can be a good start towards perfection.
Pakistan is a developing country and a lot of things are not working for us right now but we need to make sure that we don’t end up consuming all of our natural resources. We need to come up with a proper plan to make this work. May God bless Pakistan.
